Conversion using the Current Transformer Ratio Calculation Formula
The CT Ratio (Current Transformer Ratio) formula is:
- Primary Current (I₁) = is the current flowing on the high-current side (primary side) of the transformer.
- Secondary Current (I₂) = is the current on the low-current side (secondary side) of the transformer.

To use the CT Ratio Calculator, follow these simple steps:
- Enter the Primary Current (I₁): Input the current on the high-current (primary) side of the transformer. The higher measurement of amperes (A) defines this value.
- Enter the Secondary Current (I₂): Input the current on the low-current (secondary) side of the transformer. The measured quantity on the secondary side typically holds a reduced value compared to the first-side input, which both count in amperes (A).
- V After entering the primary and secondary current values, the CT Ratio will be calculated automatically using the formula: CT Ratio = I1 / I2. This ratio indicates how much the primary current is scaled down to the secondary current.
- Interpret the Result: The calculation output provides the CT ratio, which becomes necessary for choosing the proper current transformer for protective and measurement purposes. A CT ratio equal to 200:1 indicates current reduction by 200 times between the 1000A primary and 5A secondary currents.
